Islamic Terms

Ahad
A technical term, referring to hadith that does not have tawatur certainty, or possesses an isnad which has only a single chain of transmission.
Aqida
Articles of faith, belief.
Aql
Reason.
Ashraf
Noble, prominent individuals. May be used to refer to the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
Batil
False, untrue or harmful.
Bida
Innovation. A deviation from established doctrine.
Fasiq
Grave sinner.
Fatwa
A technical term, referring to a statement from a jurist, or mufti. A legal opinion that often arises from a question asked by a layman.
Hadith
Tradition of the Prophet Muhammad. A normative statement about something the Prophet said, did or agreed to.
Hikmah
Knowledge, wisdom.
Maddhab
School of jurisprudence. In Sunni Islam, consists of schools named after four jurists: Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik ibn Anas, Imam ash-Shafi’i and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
Mudhakara
Gathering of memories. Refers to the gatherings of early hadith scholars for the sole purpose of exchanging hadith.
Munazara
Gatherings in which early specialists of law met to debate.
Qibla
Direction of Muslim prayer. Refers to the Kabaa at Mecca.
Quran
The sacred scripture of Muslims. Believed to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Jibril.
