Nasty business of book reviews

By sheila | Jul 25, 2009

One of the greatest pleasures in life is to read a book so fantastic, you just have to devote an hour or two of your life to review it. I love reviewing books, especially books that deal with topics as diverse as Islamic history, Fiqh, Sufism, Theology, Wahhabism, current affairs…the list goes on.

Unfortunately, I cannot write reviews on every single book I have read. That would take up too much time. So what I do is review a principal book, and get the opinions of another book I have read to support or dispute a point. I have been doing this for 4 years, and the number of books I have reviewed is more modest that I like. Here is the complete list, from the earliest to the latest:

Isaac Asimov’s Guide to the Bible
Terror’s Source (Professor Vincenzo Oliveti)
Israel’s Wars- A History Since 1947 (Ahron Bregman)
Al Qaeda & What It Means to be Modern (John Gray)
What Went Wrong? Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response- Bernard Lewis
Western Muslims & the Future of Islam (Tariq Ramadan)
Islam, Fundamentalism, and the Betrayal of Tradition (Joseph E Lumbard)
Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil, & the Fundamentalism in Central Asia (Ahmed Rashid)
Mystical Dimensions of Islam- Annemarie Schimmel
Review of Wahhabi Islam (Natana DeLong-Bas)

I was delighted when two of my reviews,Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil, & the Fundamentalism in Central Asia and Islam, Fundamentalism, and the Betrayal of Tradition were nominated for brass crescents; the latter won. My review of Isaac Asimov’s Guide to the Bible is still cited as a source in Wikipedia.

Of course, tribute should also be paid to those who have taken the time and effort to analyze and criticize my reviews. I was never hurt by them, but I do take serious note of your opinions.

Dear reader, I have a favor to ask. If you have a book you think I can benefit from, let me know. If it shatters my world, I will review it.

I would like to recommend a book called “Islam and Secularism” by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. Worth reading.
