Overboard on the anti-Semitic label

By sheila | Feb 20, 2009

More often than not, the charge of anti-Semitism is abused. These accusations are usually hurled at individuals, groups or organizations who criticize Israel on her actions in the Occupied Territories.

Pro-Israeli champions are especially watchful after a fresh military adventure between Israel and the Palestinians. Take for example the attack on a synagogue in Venezuela, coming so soon after Israel decides to invade the Gaza Strip. Mr Abraham Foxman, the National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), promptly called this an ant-Semetic act, carried out by “violent anti-Semites”. Behind all this was a veiled swipe at Venezuela’s diplomatic coup when it expelled the Israeli ambassador in protest over Israel’s brutal re-occupation of Gaza.

Well, as it turns out, the attack on the synagogue in Caracas was motivated less by anti-Semitism than it was by greed.

I expect there will be more waxing and waning on the apparent rise of a new-Semetism across the world. I believe the UN’s recent decision to launch an independent investigation on Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip, including the possibility of the Israeli Defence Forces having committed various war and human rights crimes, will eventually be one of those things that mark the rise of this new anti-Semetism.
