Blown away by Mohammad al-Hosayn

By sheila | Mar 29, 2006

I don’t understand a word of the song, Mawlay, but this moving rendition by Mohammad al-Hosayn stirred something in my heart.

The music video can be viewed here.

I enjoy reading your blog; well-written and substantive.

The singer’s family name is al-Hosyan. The song is actually a rendition of an excerpt from the seminal poem, Burda Qasida, written in honor of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the 13th century CE by Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad Al-Busiri.

The story behind the writing of the poem is only surpassed in beauty by the words of the poem itself.

    Hi Tariq,

Thanks for the tip. Which part of the Burda Qasida does al-Hosyan’s song use?

Where can I get a translation?

The song seems to be so heartfelt.

    Hi Sheila,

Sorry, its commonly known as the Qasida Burda, not vice-versa…maybe attributable to a sudden onset of dyslexia. :-)

I believe he is taking verses from a few of the Burda’s 10 parts (the poem has 160 verses in total).

A good starting point to learn more would be here:

While it’s a nice nasheed, it’s also the most OVERPLAYED nasheed that I have ever heard of.

However not everything he sings is from the Burdah. Most of it is though.

Sheila, Hamza Yusuf has translated it to english. That is the absolute most superior english translation out there.
